I have watched so much Charles in Charge in the last 24 hours, I can’t even tell you. It’s streaming on Hulu (web only). When you’re sick and achy and all feverish, you’ll take comfort where you can get it. I will tell you that I’ve formed some pretty strong opinions. I’m not ashamed. I prefer the Pembrokes to the Powells.
Here’s a question: Why is the show so scared of calling Charles what he is? A nanny. His job is referred to as all sorts of things. Mostly live-in babysitter. If calling him a nanny is so scary and emasculating, then why create the show in the first place? Come on, 1984! I demand answers!
Here’s another question: Why is that apartment complex used as the establishing shot in the opening credits? The Pembrokes/Powells live in a house, so why do we have to stare at this apartment building? As a kid it didn’t make sense to me either so I decided that it was really a shot of Charles’ car. He must drive that red car. That’s the only thing that could possibly make sense.
Well, so is Charles, actually (sorry, Chuck). So, maybe they deserve each other.
Now, if you’ll excuse me. I have some TV to watch.
