DIY – Super Glowy Body Butter

DIY – Super Glowy Body Butter

Growing up, sweating my tits off in south Florida, I never learned to regularly moisturize my skin. I permanently glistened like a Stephanie Meyer vampire in the sun. I had no idea that something as simple as moving to the arid American west could transform my once perfectly balanced skin into a flaking, cracking, scratchy mess.

But, here I am. Simple lotion doesn’t cut it for me. 10 minutes after it absorbs, it’s gone and I’m back where I started. I was forced to turn to the bigger guns – the heavy, creamy, gooey salve that is…Body Butter.

First of all, let me say that I hate the name, “Body Butter.” I think it’s totally disgusting and evokes images of that greased up, old man who used to tan his deep, red hide on the front lawn of my apartment building. It sounds repulsive, but it’s really the best way to describe the texture.

It’s whipped and creamy, but when it hits your skin it begins to heat and melt with your body temperature. It not only moisturizes, but also adds a protective layer that both makes your skin glow and traps the moisture.

If you’re not careful, you can look like a greased pig or any Hollywood starlet on a talk show, so, I’d recommend to go easy. A little goes a long way.

Now, why make your own? It’s cheaper, its easy and best of all you know every ingredient in it.

So, let’s get to that shizz.
What you’ll need:

2 cups Extra Virgin, Raw & Organic Coconut Oil
7 oz. Shea Butter
1 drop Tea Tree Oil
*Essential oils of your choice (peppermint, lavender, jasmine, whatever you think smells yummy)
*optional for extra yumminess

Containers or jars with an air tight lid. You can always just use your Coconut oil or Shea Butter jars if they’re empty
Recipe yields around 30 0z and lasts 9 – 12 mos

Add Coconut oil and Shea butter to a microwave or double-boiler safe bowl. Use microwave or double-boiler to liquify the mixture. Remove from heat. Add tea tree oil and optional essential oils and blend for 1 minute.

Allow to cool and solidify. If you’re in a hurry, put the bowl in the refrigerator. Once solid, whip until smooth and fluffy. Transfer to your jar.

Easy peasy. Now go luxuriate, bitches.

*My favorite scent combos:
1. Lemon, jasmine, spearmint
2. Sweet orange essence, lemon
3. Peppermint, lavender, basil

  • Love it! Where do you store it once you’ve made it? The cabinet or the fridge?

    • That is an excellent question!
Since both of the major components live typically in a solid state, you can store them in the cabinet, but keep in mind that they also have a melting point.
So, I’d say it depends on how cool you keep you house.
In the summer, I typically store mine in the fridge because our house lingers around 73 degrees. That’s not hot enough to melt it, but it will make the texture more greasy and I like it to be creeeeeamy.
If you live in Florida or some other very hot/ humid place, i would say always store it in your fridge. I took some with me to visit my mom in FL in February and it staid pretty melty the entire trip.

  • Would you be so kind to let me know if it would be a good idea to add a bit of wax to this so it does not melt as easily? And how much would you recommend, so it does not change the texture too much… Thank you..jane
