Everyone in my house caught a cold this weekend. We went from varying stages of sprawl, sometimes on the carpet, sometimes in an actual bed, but every time pretty miserable. I feel I spent my time wisely by reading Jane Austen fan fiction and watching Jazz On A Summer’s Day. According to a YouTube commenter, it’s great to have it on in the background while you are doing other things, so I figured it was kind of like a music mix.
Many of the greats are here performing, Jimmy Giuffre, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Stitt, Anita O’Day, Dinah Washington, Gerry Mulligan, Chuck Berry, Louis Armstrong, and Jack Teagarden. Not to mention Big Maybelle and Mahalia Jackson. Aside from the amazing musicians and getting to see them up close and personal, this movie delights me because of the FASHION. I won’t share with you the physical sensations that just the sunglasses alone in this film coerced from my body. This clip of Anita O’Day’s performance is all you really need to view to know what I am talking about. She is an amazing performer, the music is wonderful, HER OUTFIT is the bee’s knees, and then every single person in the audience is the absolute top.
If you don’t want to watch the film you have to at least watch this one of Dinah Washington too, because she is just amazing.
BUT really, please just watch/listen to the whole thing, you will thank me, I promise.
